What is the best timber to use for your subfloor?

The choice of material for your subfloor depends on many factors such as:

  • Is the deck going to be under a roof?

  • Does the extension to the existing dwelling have any wet areas?

  • Are there large spans between bearers?

  • Will there be load bearing walls on the new subfloor?

  • How close is the subfloor to the ground?

Both pine and hardwood subfloors have advantages and disadvantages:

  • Pine subfloors (LVLS) are a light weight and cost effective material when it comes to subfloors. They have a great spanning capacity, promote a flawless finish and are an engineered product which is a pleasure to work with as they are relatively straight. On the other hand though, some pine subfloors are more susceptible to the weather if they are not prepared correctly prior to their installation.

  • Hardwood subfloors are also a great product as they have a large spanning capacity and as the name suggests, hardwood timber is extremely durable, high quality and offers a long-lasting option for multiple subfloor applications. Though, hardwood subfloors are generally more expensive due to their slower rate of growth and can be more labour intensive during the installation of the subfloor due to the timber not being straight and bowed.

It is also important to note that no matter what subfloor material you choose,  it must follow strict QBCC guidelines in order to pass certification and it must also adhere with the engineered drawings for the particular project.
